Began his military career as a volunteer for the duration of the war with the 5th Lancers Regiment on 1 August 1914.

Citation for his Knight’s Cross of the Order of the Crown with Palm: “On 3 November 1918, during the battle of Wippelgem, commanded a platoon with remarkable courage and confidence, advancing continuously under heavy machine-gun fire and forcing the enemy to abandon their positions, capturing a machine gun with its two gunners”

He was also a Grand Officer of the Order of the Crown (1952) and a Commander Order of Leopold (1948).
